Avignon Papacy

The Avignon Papacy (1309–1376) was a time when seven successive Popes, all French, resided in Avignon rather than Rome. This period marked a decline in papal independence, heavily influenced by the French monarchy. It ultimately contributed to the later Western Schism, shaking the foundations of the medieval Church.
