+Crenellation is a distinctive architectural feature, a rhythmic pattern of alternating high and low sections along the top of a [Parapet](/wiki/parapet) or wall. This design, common in [Castles](/wiki/castle) and ancient fortifications, offered defensive cover to archers, allowing them to fire safely.
