Danish West Indies

+The Danish West Indies was a former [Danish](/wiki/Denmark) colony in the [Caribbean](/wiki/Caribbean) Sea, established primarily for sugar cultivation. These islands endured centuries of colonial rule and the transatlantic slave trade. In 1917, Denmark sold the territory to the United States, which subsequently became the modern [U.S. Virgin Islands](/wiki/Virgin_Islands).
