+The Empire of Nicaea was the largest of the [Byzantine Empire](/wiki/byzantine_empire)'s successor states, formed after [Constantinople](/wiki/constantinople) fell to the Fourth Crusade in 1204. From its base in western Anatolia, it served as a primary claimant to the imperial throne, eventually restoring the empire in 1261.
