+An **excited state** occurs when an atom, molecule, or particle possesses more energy than its stable [Ground State](/wiki/ground_state). This temporary elevation, often triggered by absorbing a [Photon](/wiki/photon), makes the entity unstable. It will eventually release this excess energy, often as light, to return to a lower energy configuration.
