Flying Buttress

A flying buttress is an elegant architectural element, often found in Gothic structures, designed to counteract the outward thrust of heavy vaulted ceilings. It consists of a half-arch extending from an upper wall to a detached pier, channeling lateral forces to the ground. This innovation allowed for thinner walls and magnificent, expansive windows in Cathedral design.
