+Gaulish was an ancient [Celtic language](/wiki/Celtic_language) spoken by the [Gauls](/wiki/Gauls) across Western Europe before and during the Roman era. A Continental Celtic tongue, it left its echoes in place names, eventually yielding to the spread of [Latin](/wiki/Latin) after the [Roman conquest](/wiki/Roman_conquest).
