+The **Gunpowder Plot** was a failed conspiracy by English [Catholics](/wiki/catholics) to assassinate King James I and blow up the [Houses of Parliament](/wiki/parliament) on 5 November 1605. Discovered just hours before its execution, the plot led to the capture and execution of its orchestrators, most famously Guy Fawkes.
