+A hoplite was a citizen-soldier of [Ancient Greece](/wiki/ancient-greece), primarily serving as heavy infantry. Equipped with a large round shield (aspis) and a long spear (dory), they fought in tightly packed formations known as the [Phalanx](/wiki/phalanx).
