John Singleton (1968–2019) was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He broke barriers as the first Black director and youngest person ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for his iconic debut, Boyz n the Hood, which vividly depicted life in South Central Los Angeles. His films often explored urban life and social issues with a raw, honest voice.
