Kofun Period

The Kofun Period, from roughly 250 to 538 AD, marks an early stage of state formation in ancient Japan, named for its distinctive monumental burial mounds (kofun). Emerging after the Yayoi Period, this era saw the rise of powerful regional clans, eventually consolidating into the Yamato Court and laying foundations for a unified state.
