+A **layer** is a distinct plane or sheet, often one of several stacked. It represents a level or division within a larger structure, from a [Geologic](/wiki/Geologic) stratum to an abstract concept in [Design](/wiki/Design). Each layer contributes to the whole, yet can be considered individually.
