A mucous membrane is a moist inner lining found in various internal body passages that open to the outside, such as the respiratory or digestive tracts. It secretes Mucus, a slippery substance that protects underlying Tissue from pathogens, dehydration, and mechanical stress, while also aiding in absorption and secretion.
