+Proto Norse was the ancient tongue of Scandinavia, spoken from roughly 200 to 700 AD. Found primarily in [Runes](/wiki/Runes) on artifacts, it is the direct linguistic ancestor of [Old Norse](/wiki/Old_Norse) and the other [North Germanic](/wiki/North_Germanic) languages, bridging the gap to the Viking Age.
