+**Trench warfare** is a form of [land warfare](/wiki/Land_Warfare) where opposing armies fight from fortified lines of trenches, often leading to a [stalemate](/wiki/Stalemate). Characterized by long periods of attrition and horrific conditions, it defined much of World War I's Western Front.
