The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR) was one of the 15 constituent republics of the Soviet Union, existing from 1922 until its dissolution in 1991. It was a foundational member of the United Nations and a vital industrial and agricultural heartland within the Eastern Bloc. Its collapse heralded the emergence of an independent Ukraine.
