Union Of Crowns

The Union of Crowns is a personal union where two or more sovereign states are ruled by the same monarch, yet remain legally distinct realms. A prime example is the 1603 accession of James VI and I to the English throne, joining the crowns of Scotland and England under one ruler while preserving their separate parliaments and laws. This arrangement differs from a full political merger.
