+Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax applied to goods and services. It is collected in stages, at each point where value is added to a product, until the final sale to the [Consumer](/wiki/consumer). This system contrasts with a [Sales Tax](/wiki/sales_tax), as VAT is often levied on the margin rather than the total sale price at each stage.
