Wallis Simpson (1896–1986) was an American socialite whose proposed marriage to King Edward VIII sparked a constitutional crisis in the United Kingdom. Her two divorces were deemed an obstacle for a monarch's consort. Edward ultimately chose to abdicate his throne for her, becoming the Duke of Windsor.
