+"West Germany" was the common name for the [Federal Republic](/wiki/federal_republic) formed in 1949. During the [Cold War](/wiki/cold_war), it was a democratic Western power, existing separately from [East Germany](/wiki/east_germany). It later reunited with the East, ending its distinct identity in 1990.
