+**Wilhelm Röntgen** (1845–1923) was a German physicist who, in 1895, discovered a new form of electromagnetic radiation, which he named [X-rays](/wiki/X-rays). This groundbreaking work earned him the first ever [Nobel Prize](/wiki/Nobel_Prize) in Physics in 1901.
