+The Zapotec are an [Indigenous](/wiki/Indigenous_people) people of southern [Mexico](/wiki/Mexico), primarily inhabiting the state of Oaxaca. Their ancient civilization, flourishing for over a thousand years, left behind monumental cities and one of Mesoamerica's earliest writing systems.
