+Younger Futhark is a runic alphabet that emerged in Scandinavia during the [Viking Age](/wiki/viking_age). Evolving from [Elder Futhark](/wiki/elder_futhark), it dramatically reduced the number of characters to 16, yet encoded the same phonemes, leading to a period of widespread runic inscriptions across Norse lands.
